Flue-gas purification for Austria's largest biomass-fuelled heating plant

The heating plant of the City of Lienz is the largest municipal utility in Austria generating district heat exclusively from biomass (bark, saw-mill waste, and 10% chopped material from agricultural operations). The heat output is approx. 15 MW. The plant is run as a joint operation of the Municipality of Lienz (4%), the District Heat Company of the Province of Styria (48%), and TIWAG (Tiroler Wasserkraftwerke AG) (48%). As of the 2001/2002 heating season, district heat is being delivered to about 1800 households and commercial enterprises. This will result in a significant improvement of air quality in and around Lienz.
