WHEN PEGGY DALLA ROSA'S HUSBAND, ROLDANO, said he wanted to buy a rural property, she was stunned. "Why" she asked at the time, 25 years ago. "He said, 'I love Canadian nature and here we are in downtown Toronto,'" Peggy recounts. Soon after, the couple was looking at a property for sale in an area known as Northumberland Hills, east of the city. "We were walking up from the river and I looked at my husband's face. I knew I was sunk," she says with a laugh.
