A number of genetic conditions predispose mink to pathological conditions. The Hedlund White mink exhibit hearing and olfactory losses and are also somewhat difficult to breed. The Aleutian gene confers problems for infections in general that includesboils, but also to the parvovirus named after this strain of mink where the disease was first observed. Blue iris mink exhibit symptoms similar to those of Chediak-Higashi syndrome in animals and humans, a condition characterized by a deficiency of natural killer cells and an autosomal recessive defect in lysosomal enzyme production with decreased lytic activity (Roder and Duwe, 1979; Roder et al., 1980) that could explain their increased sensitivity to the Aleutian disease virus since they cannot lyse the virus.
