For more than 20 years after she had immigrated to Montreal, Cinea de Souza Daoud resisted the idea of creating a garden. A native of Brazil, she saw no reason to cultivate plants outdoors in a country that is "covered in snow for a third of the year." Her husband, Habib, who had emigrated from Syria and met Cinea at the Royal Victoria Hospital, where they both worked as doctors, did not share her reservations. He had created a vegetable patch behind their charming 1913 home in the Outremont area ofMontreal, which they bought in 1980, but it wasn't enough; he yearned for an ornamental garden, reminiscent of those he had known in the Middle East.
