Aylesbury-based Dorman Machinery has won an order in excess of 1 million pounds for a Modler centreless match grinding cell. The twin machine cell is expected to be among the most advanced of its type in the world and thought to be unique in the UK. Dorman Machinery managing director Chris Boraston says: "CNC match grinding is among the most demanding of all high precision grinding tasks and there are very few machines capable of carrying out this process, let alone delivering the tolerances required on a high volume production basis. "In this particular instance, our customer had previously match ground small shafts between centres on external grinders and improvements were required on roundness, surface finish and straightness. A reduction in cycle time was a must to meet a huge increase in production demands. The component suited a centreless grinding operation but match grinding on a centreless machine had not been considered before."
