Flagship factory fires up: The manufacturing cost of compressor blades at Rolls-Royce's flagship plant at Inchinnan, Scotland, will be half what it was 10 years ago, in real terms
It's Thursday afternoon, a new shift has started and there's a huddle in the 'cast segment' cell. They are discussing how they can avoid working Saturday. A workers' conspiracy? No, it's teamwork and they are talking about how they can get the cell's output up to the target figure. For this is Rolls-Royce's new Inchinnan, Scotland manufacturing plant - the firm's flagship production facility and the largest factory that the company will have in the UK. The cell team members, like all other full-time employees at the plant (.900 at completion), are single-status, salaried employees and there's a 'no paid overtime' regime - but, if confirmed achievable cell output targets are not met, then the employees work extended hours to achieve the required level of output.
