Balsam fir

Due to its status as Canada's bestselling Christmas tree, most of us are more accustomedto seeing the balsam fir (Abies bal-samea) in our living rooms than in our gardens. Nevertheless, the balsam fir's impeccable pyramidal form makes it a superb evergreen specimen tree in all seasons, particularly in front gardens where its strong, triangular outline will enhance the architecture of any home. Of the almost 50 species of Abies worldwide, just five are native to Canada, and the balsam fir is the only variety that's indigenous to every province except British Columbia - while the other fourdon't grow east of Alberta. Hardy to Zone 2, balsam firs prefer moist, acidic sandy soils but adapt well to average garden conditions. Unlike many conifers, they tolerate shady settings when young, and even mature specimens grow best in partly shaded situations.
