On Ontario's Georgian Bay, an intrepid pair of retired teachers, Bill and Dawn Loney, have wrested green lushness from layers of rock to fashion Keppel Croft - a collection of showstopping gardens that enchants 3,000 visitors a year.Ontario's Georgianbluffs has a rocky reputation -for its worn beach pebbles, gravel, cobbles, layers of limestone and shale, granite hardheads and glacial erratics. And Bill and Dawn Loney have encountered them all. This determined duo has spent 36 years carving out a complex series of gardens they call Keppel Croft (after Keppel, the original township) on some 30 hectares of ancient shingle. "It's heartbreak country for farming," says Bill, "but it provides us with a splendid resource for our gardens, especially pebbles for mulch."
