Next generation Heidenhain - Heidenhain's latest CNC unit with its standardised TNC look belies a major change in its technology

The fact that the new Heidenhain TNC I 320, to be launched at MACH 2006 (NEC, Birmingham, 15-19 May) looks just like the iTNC 530 series hides the fact that behind the screen this new mid-range control is very different. The very core of the CNC - the NC kernel, or CNC operating system - is all new and far more modular and flexible than before, for which read greater opportunity to add functions. It is not an 'open' kernel, however, as Heidenhain (GB) managing director Malcolm Smith explains; any access to the core real time motion control area will be controlled and probably limited to internal Heidenhain developers.
