Petroleum products are an essential energy resource and will continue to be for many more years to come. Primary energy demand for transport is expected to continue to be largely met by oil products. The International Energy Agency estimates that, to 2040, oil products will continue to provide 85 % of the world's total demand for transportation fuels. In the UK's case, the Department of Energy and Climate Change estimates that oil products will meet 90% (including aviation) of our transportation needs to 2035.
