According to Colorado School of Mines chemical engineer Andrew Herring, "American soldiers today carry so many electronic devices in their field packs that the weight of batteries alone is a concern." With this in mind, the U.S. Department of Defense is funding Herring and polymer scientist Bryan Coughlin and others to develop a lighter-weight fuel cell power source.
