The confidence of British soft fruit growers has been strengthened even further this summer by the interest that the major multiples are taking by putting more raspberries on their shelves. Historically raspberries have filled virtually a niche marketover a nine week period in June and July, drawing supplies not just from southern England, but also Scotland. Nicholas Marston, managing director of KG Fruits (KGF), the largest grower group which is predicting total annual sales of all soft fruit including imports of pound 128 m by December predicts the raspberry season will eventually extend to five months and has the potential to expand sales by 20% annually into the future. Currently the British crop accounts for some 2,500 t, an increase of some 1,000 t since 2001, and valued with a value of around pound 50 m, about a fifth of strawberries.
