The future of the Italian kiwifruit production

The Kiwifruit Congress organized by the Centro Servizi Ortofrutti-coli (CSO)in co-operation with the region Emilia-Romagna on April 21, 2011, presented a range of opportunities for the development of the Italian kiwifruit production. One of the main topics was the problems with bacteria causing a decrease in production not only in Italy. The kiwifruit has indeed experienced a turbulent development on the world market in the past two decades. From 2008-2011 the average crop volume amounted to 1.8 m. Leading the exporters list is China with 492,0001,followed by Italy with 430,0001, New Zealand with 385,0001, Chile with 187,000 t and Greece with 79,0001. These five countries account for 87% of the global supply.
