Italy: Stronger demand for organic products

In 2009 Italy's organic sector increased with regard to area as well as consumption. However, the number of companies active in this industry has declined. Italy continues to be Europe's leading organic producer country. According to data published bythe national information authority for organic agriculture SINAB (Sistema d'lnformazione Nazionale sull'Agricoltura Biologica) in July 2010, the total area under organic cultivation in Italy amounted to 1,106,684 hectares by December 31, 2009, representing an increase of 10.4% compared to the previous year.
