Silver lining for US orange exports in 2008

Adverse winter weather reduced the yield for navel oranges harvested in California in early 2007, and total US fresh orange exports were down a fourth to 360,153 t in 2007, valued at US 301 m dollar. Weather was more normal for the 2008 orange harvestestimated at 8.9 million t. Exports increased by 72.3 % during January-March 2008 to 262,133 t, an indication that shipments for all 2008 might rise to over 600,000 t. The value increased by 50.4% in the first three months of 2008 to US 197.9 m dollar.Canada and markets in East Asia account for most of US orange exports. The value for exports to the European Union of 27 dropped from nearly US 3 m dollar in 2005 to only US 62,000 dollar in 2007.
