Czech potato industry geared up for the EU

In the year 2000, the Czech Republic had only 69,236 ha (171,082 a) still planted to potatoes (1990: 109,290 ha). This provided a crop of 1,875 m t (1990: 2,360 mt). During the same period, yield rose from 21.6 t/ha, or 8.86 t/a, to 27.09 t/ha, or 11.1 t/a, in 2000. The substantial increases in yield can be ascribed to advances achieved in breeding, organization, training, technology and fertilizer use as well as improved soil treatment.
