Banafair is an association which imports Fair Trade bananas from the Caribbean. The bananas are mainly sold in natural food shops. The partner on the producing side is an association of growers in Latin America and the Caribbean who use organic farming methods and take the social situation of their workers into account. "Fair" bananas were "born" in Frauenfeld in Switzerland in the early 1970s. Church contacts to Guatemala drew the attention of a number of Swiss women to the bad living and working conditions prevailing in the banana plantations. The women spoke in favour of improving the situation and demanded that bananas produced "fairly" should be sold at higher prices on the Swiss market. Later the growing areas in Nicaragua were included too and the bananas produced "fairly" there were known under the brand name " Nica bananas". At about the same time, the "Banafair" organization was founded in Germany.
