Fruit and vegetable packaging in the United Kingdom is being constantly elevated to new heights by the multiple trade, which now accounts for over 80 percent of all sales. Prepacking in all its forms probability represents some 40 percent. In simple terms it has become part and parcel of the industry because hygiene and ease of handling in store and the demand for information are being given increasing prominence. An integrated part of marketing it is valued as a route not just to provide identification but introduce new products, create awareness amongst children, and reinforce the healthy diet message. While organics are well established in these terms, labelling of conventionally grown crops is also used to highlight growers who are supporting the environment. Without doubt the route forward was influenced by the adoption of now universally used PLU's (Price look Up Codes).
