White Sapote Watching

White sapotes have considerable recuperative powers. One of the first things everyone notices about them is their tendency to lose and regain their leaves upon occasion. In our grove some of them did this in adolescence at unpredictable times and forreasons I never did figure out. The trees all grew out of this as they got older and I was left with the thought that it is generally not worth concerning oneself with adolescent behavior anyway. The adult tendency to lose leaves depends on the variety.Some of the trees do not normally do this. On the other hand, the Cuccios, among other varieties, drop their leaves with little hesitation when it gets too hot. A little over iio°f seems to annoy the Cuccios, and we occasionally get as high as iio°f in our grove, which is sufficient to annoy a good many of the sapotes.
