Prices for US apples moved higher in 2011

Shoppers found higher prices for apples in US stores during the autumn of 2011, and rumours of even higher prices. The 2011 apple harvest came in time to ease the price hikes that were feared when some wholesalers found supplies in storage of the 2010crop running low by June 2011. The apple production in 2011 was steady near the level of the previous year, and much of the watch on prices stemmed from trade trends and greater consumer demand. International trade has been somewhat different than the way it was last year. US imports declined by 24% during January-September 2on, as arrivals from Chile declined a fourth. That tended to push down total supplies held in storage. US exports during January-September 2011 advanced by 7 % and higher prices moved the value up by 14 %.
