A winter vegetable that has already been tested in space thrives in the Marca Trevigiana region near Venice. Radicchio Rosso di Treviso has been known since the 16th century and was mentioned in an 1862 scientific handbook. It was granted Protected Designation of Origin status under the European Union programme of that name on 1 July 1996.
