The persimmon, or as it is also variously described throughout the Western world as a kaki, or Sharon fruit, has been upgraded by Valencia's growers as something special. The fruit is well known throughout southern Europe tracing its history back to the time when it was brought from Asia, In Spain it has been grown along the Mediterranean coastline extending south to Catalonia and Andalusia. But further north in the Jucar Valley in the Valencian region the emergence of a natural mutation called RocaBrillante, which is recognised as being brighter and larger, has earnt its denomination certification from the Commission in Brussels, alongside the few other products recognised for their unique status. Its texture and taste is described by Vicente Mozar, president of the region's Council which fiercely protects the Rojo's authenticity, as "similar to a crisp peach which has no stone or pips and can be eaten like an apple."
