Intensively lighting tomato plants for long periods in the winter often gives problems in practice with black heads and stagnated growth. However, trials run by PRI in Wageningen proved that these problems can be avoided. The crops given most light performed best and also utilised the extra light best. In practice the sugars formed during intensive peri-ods of artificial lighting are often not transported sufficiently to the fruits and growing parts of the plants. The result is short, thick leaves, dark heads and stagnated growth. Partly for this reason, growers in the Netherlands who began to use artificial lighting just a few years ago are starting to cut back.
