Supermarket Food Safety: Wegmans trains suppliers on produce safety

Once upon a time, food safety was not an issue for the produce industry. That's not the case anymore, at least not for the five commodities linked to 75 percent of the produce illness outbreaks that occurred between 1998 and 2006. Those commodities are leafy greens, tomatoes, netted melons, herbs and green onions, according to Bill Pool, manager of agricultural production and research for Wegmans.
