A directed commercial fishery on horse (gaper) clams, Tresus capax and Tresus nuttallii (Bivalvia: Mactridae) is being developed in BC, Canada. We adapted a spawning stock biomass per recruit (SPR) analysis to evaluate the effect of different multi-year rotation fisheries and alternative exploitation rates on the stock reproduction potential. Our analysis also incorporated variation in the estimates of natural mortality rate and growth. converting uncertainties inherent in scientific knowledge into estimates of biological risk. The information produced will enable fishery managers to choose a fishing scheme based on the degree of precaution required.
