Considering incomplete knowledge when designing future strategies for forest management practices under climatic change scenarios, means to integrate uncertainty as a dominant factor. Incomplete knowledge is caused by uncertain predictions of the climatic conditions of the future, by uncertainty about response of tree species to these altered environmental conditions, and by uncertainty about societal demands to forests in the future. However, to handle this uncertainty it seems worthwile, to consider a broad ecological range of tree species and to stress the importance of dynamic and closed nutrient cycles. Species should be mixed more or less intensively with regard to their seed dispersal ability. While pioneers may be admixed in small patches and in small proportions, shade tolerants with poor dispersal ability should be scattered throughout the stands. The problem of different competitive strength of the species can be counteracted by aggregated mixtures. Due to shifting environmental conditions "naturalness" as a reference for tree species choice in close-to-nature forestry is probably loosing its paradigmatic character.
