New England Utility Says 'Renewable Gas' Is 'A Real and Viable Option,' with the Technical Potential to Meet up to 25% of Natural Gas Demand in the Region in the Long Term

According to a 7/22/10 white paper from New England's largest utility, National Grid, "renewable gas" has the potential to make a significant contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while creating local jobs, enhancing security of supply, and meeting demand for natural gas. National Grid defines "renewable gas" (biogas or biomethane) as pipeline quality gas derived from biomass that is injected into the natural gas distribution network fo direct use in existing natural gas appliances. The utility thinks that the biggest driver of demand for renewable gas could be its role in reducing emissions. Another compelling factor is that use of biogas would also enhance diversity of supply while providing a solution for using local waste resources to produce renewable energy, the utility said. However, more support is needed for biogas, as there is a significant disparity between government policies that support renewable gas versus other renewables, such as solar or wind.
