Discovering the experts

Over a decade ago, the article "Banish the Term Compliance" (Hauchecorne, 1992), describing the arrogant attitude that this word conveys, had a profound effect on my attitudes and counselling practices. Other authors have written similar articles on this concept and the need to move away from a compliance-based model of care to one that is more empowering. With the volume of literature supporting this paradigm shift, I remain puzzled as to why I still read and hear this term being used in health care today.
