Energy Information Administration Report: “Americas Region” is Home to Considerable Natural Gas and Oil Reserves; Energy-Hungry China’s Investment in the Americas is Significant

Growing in importance in energy markets, the Americas region – defined as North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America -- in 2012 accounted for 33% of proved worldwide reserves of crude oil (536 billion barrels) and 10% of proved natural gas reserves (693 Tcf), produced 29% of the world’s liquid fuels supply (almost 26 MMb/d), and consumed 33% of the world’s liquid fuels (30 MMb/d), the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported recently. In 2012, the region accounted for 25% of global crude imports, 9% of global crude exports, and 22% of global petroleum product imports and exports, according to the EIA’s paper, Liquid Fuels and Natural Gas in the Americas, released on Jan. 31. In the report, EIA examined major energy trends and developments of the past decade in the Americas focusing on liquid fuels and natural gas, including reserves and resources, production, consumption, trade, and investment.
