A new species, genus Copidognathus (Acari: Halacaridae), from a hydrothermal vent area of the East Pacific Rise

A new halacarid species, Copidognathus tritoni sp. nov., is described. It has been taken near a hydrothermal vent area on the East Pacific Rise (EPR), at about 9°51' N-104°18' W and a depth of 2500 m. The new species shares numerous characters with the hydrothermal vent mites C. papillatus Krantz, 1982 and C. nautilei Bartsch, 1997, known from the Eastern Pacific and Atlantic, respectively, as well as with the cold seep halacarid C.flabelliferus Bartsch, 2011, known from the Gulf of Mexico. The new species can be separated from the last-mentioned ones because of (1) the ornamentation of its dorsal plates, punctate and reticulate in and outside the raised areolae, (2) the striated dorsal integument, less wrinkled than in the other species, and (3) the absence of a dorsal seta on the basifemora of legs III and IV.
