The Lothian Eatates: A thousand hectares of timber in the Scottish Borders

Enclosed between Northumberland's Cheviot Hills and the Southern Uplands to the south of Edinburgh, Scottish Borders Region covers the old shire counties of Berwick, Roxburgh, Selkirk and Peebles. A disputed area in centuries past, in what was frequently hostile terrain physically and socially, a man needed to be master of more than one good horse if he were to survive. Four hundred years have passed since the Union of the Crowns recognised King James of Scotland as monarch of England. A century later the Treaty of Union officially united the two countries. Even so, many of those living in the Scottish Borders still choose to remember the troubled times by dressing in period garb, mounting their feisty steeds and taking part in animated Common Ridings.
