Balancing turbine and woodland benefits

Uupland areas of the UK can provide a significant contribution to reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the appropriate development and delivery of renewable energy from wind, water and wood. These 'natural assets' can be used to provide energy that reduces our reliance upon fossil fuels. Woodland has the additional advantage of delivering a wide range of other public benefits including the provision of various 'ecosystem services' for example biodiversity, carbon sequestration, pollution capture, recreational opportunities, and the production of timber. Timber products can be used to substitute for carbon-intensive building materials, such as concrete and steel, enhancing the mitigation potential of wood, or wood can substitute for fossilfuels in the production of heat or electricity.
