After the recent turmoil in the financial markets, a high degree of uncertainty has been brought back into the economy and for the timber industry, this is not helpful. Forest owners have seen excellent returns on their standing timber sales over thepast two years and processor activity has been at an all-time high across the UK industry. Recent figures show that domestic sawn timber now accounts for 40 % of UK consumption, more than double that of a few years ago. We know that this is 40 % of a much smaller total volume, but nevertheless a significant achievement that is bound to last as users and specifiers have been brought around to using UK timber on a day-today basis.
