Solid timber buildings have a long and illustrious history. In crude terms, log buildings epitomise solid timber construction: large, relatively unprocessed tree trunks simply notched and stacked on top of one another to form a variety of buildings, from simple houses to the most elaborate of halls and churches. Almost any type and quality of timber can be used for this, as the massive nature of the construction means that defects, such as knots, are unlikely to be adjacent to one another and so theintegrity of the structure as a whole is maintained.
