Formulation flexibility in trout feed offe cost and sustainability benefits

FEEDING trials in two countries conclusively demonstrated that by using the MicroBalance concept Skretting can formulate trout feeds with consistent performance, even though they have widely differing fishmeal contents. The first trials were conductedby Skretting Aquaculture Research Centre (ARC) at its dedicated trout facility, Mozzecane, in Italy. The results were confirmed by further trials in the UK. The MicroBalance concept uses a full understanding of the micro-ingredients needed by the fish.Many of these are contained in established raw materials such as fishmeal, together with macro-ingredients such as protein and fats. If fishmeal is supplemented with vegetable alternatives the content of some micro-ingredients is reduced and eventually a minimum limit is reached. Identifying these micro-nutrients and providing them from alternative sources greatly extends the range of inclusion levels for fishmeal without detracting from the nutritional value of the feed.
