摘要

THE pressure is on for aquaculture feed manufacturers to develop more 'green' feeds for the industry - especially ones that contain less fishmeal and fish oil. Leading South African abalone feed manufacturer, Marifeed (Pty) Ltd, which is based in Hermanus, is now producing a new product that complies with the recent WWF requirements. This is possible thanks to the research of specialists and students at the Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science (DIFS) at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, which Marifeed has a longstanding relationship with. The WWF aquaculture feed standards stem from concern over the sustainability of marine fish stocks - more specifically, the capture of fish species for the production of fishmeal and fish oil.
