The application of Event Risk Management

25 YEARS in the aquaculture industry have allowed Sunderland Marine to amass a great deal of unique information relating to the operation of the myriad systems used to grow fish. During this time the company has been privileged to deal with dedicatedpractitioners in the aquaculture industry — not just farmers but also other stakeholders. However, simply experiencing the industry is, in the company's view, not enough. Sunderland Marine has, through the employment of a dedicated risk management division, applied various lessons learnt from both the passive survey of individual sites, which now exceed 6,000 individual reports, and by a more active management of events. The company has learned a great deal, from all incidents irrespective of size, aseven small events can aggregate to provide as much valuable data as may be derived from a major event. Over the years the company has introduced a series of best practice manuals and initiatives dealing with the major causes of loss. These are given greater sophistication by the risk management team, who will tailor a particular practice to the individual site characteristics.
