US shrimp anti-dumping dispute rumbles on

IN response to a recent declaration by the US Department of Commerce (DoC), that there is reason to investigate shr imp expoits to the US from several leading producers, a second American-owned company has said it would mount a legal challenge againstthe DoC if it rules against Vietnam producers in its shrimp dumping investigation. The US-owned shiimp breeder American Technologies announced in February it would lodge a complaint if the department made what the company considered an unfair ruling against Vietnam shiimp producers. From 1998 to 2003, shrimp exports from Vietnam alone rose from 720 tonnes to 11,500 tonnes and rose in value from less than US 70 million dollar to more than US 500 million dollar, making shiimp a substantial part of Vietnam's US 36 billion dollar economy.
