CSIRO research: advancing Australian aquaculture breeds

AUSTRALIA has a dynamic and diverse aquaculture industry extending across tropical, subtropical and temperate environments. Five species contr ibute 92% of the total gross value of the industiy: southern bluefin tuna, pearls, Atlantic salmon, edible oysters, and prawns. The industiy aims to increase its value from annual sales of A 0.8 billion dollar to at least A 2. 5 billion dollar by 2010. This requires advancing from a reliance on wild or unselected genotypes to the use of superior genotypes sourced through domestication and selective breeding. CSIRO is partnering with industry and other Australian research agencies to facilitate this transformation.
