Witherslack Woodlands: Keeping up with the times, in the largest of semi-natural woodland in Cumbria

The circumstances that saw the Witherslack woodland site come into the Stanley family just after the War of the Roses are shrouded in tales of subterfuge and treachery. At the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 supposed supporters of the King, Thomas Stanleyand Sir William Stanley, held back before deploying their force on the side of the Lancastrians and helped seal the fate of Richard III.
