Intermercato AB is a Swedish producer of accessories (rotators, clamshell buckets, grapples etc) for cargo cranes, forest cranes and material handlers. Through a series of coincidences, about eight years ago, the company came in contact with the so-called strain gauge technology. A short investigation of the timber crane scale market showed a degree of dissatisfaction with the hydraulic scales which were currently available. This was confirmed by extensive tests which had been carried out by Skogforsk (the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden), which showed a lack of reliability in hydraulic weighing equipment. Weighing results would differ highly from driver to driver, with changes in loading conditions and also with temperature. Another problem that was put forward by many users of hydraulic scales was the breaking of cables.
