Certification grew rapidly in the UK up until 2007, but the area certified has remained relatively static since then; the growth in certified timber seems to be simply an increase in harvesting mature plantations rather than a significant increase innew forests entering certification. The proportion of the softwood material supplied by private forestry which is certified remains constant at around 70 per cent (see table 1). Output from the FC (which is 100 % certified) is flatlining, and some millsare now reporting that they are struggling to source sufficient certified material. In December 2013, Confor commissioned an independent review of certification in the UK, which included interviews with a wide range of members, to review possible options and develop a number of key recommendations.
