JENNY AND TONY ENDERBY report on the recovery of the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve. The French ocean explorer and diving pioneer Capt. Jacques Cousteau described the water of the Poor Knights Islands off Northland as 'one of the top ten dive sites in the world'. Nowhere else in New Zealand do we see such a diversity of marine life. While protected as a marine reserve in 1981, limited fishing was allowed until late in 1998. Now, fully protected, the waters round the islands are recovering in adramatic fashion.
