Ash dieback, also known as Chalara fraxinea, and caused by the fungus Hymenocyphus pseudoalbidus, is acknowledged to be on the rampage across north-western Europe.75-90% of trees are typically badly affected, leading ultimately to their being felled. The well publicised leaf and shoot symptoms are often accompanied by a severe attack of honey fungus, leading to the affected trees falling over, but long before that the basal lengths of timber are discoloured and degraded.
