The Mediterranean cypress has been cultivated throughout the widerMediterranean region for millennia and is almost certainly the slender, spire-like, dark green conifer appearing in paintings and other artworks depicting scenes from ancient Greece and ancient Rome. C sempervirens was the first-choice tree for virtually all ancient Persian gardens. One of the oldest specimens on record in Yazd province of modern-day Iran is calculated to be 4,000 years old.
