Issues stand in way of salmon industry's growth

WHILE global aquaculture production must increase in order to meet-demand, a number of challenges need to be overcome, a Trondheim seminar has heard. The event focused on the salmon industries in Norway and Chile and how research and technology development can help meet the challenges they face. Delegates heard that issues facing the aquaculture industry include competition for available resources, environmental factors and sustainable development. Karl Almas, President of SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture, said that, due to factors including lack of available land and competition with the agriculture industry, marine aquaculture has emerged as the sector with most potential for expansion. In this respect Norway and Chile - which are the world's first and second largest salmon producers respectively - have a number of advantages, he added.
