THE integration of seaweed biofilters to clean and polish waste water for re-circulation, after finfish or shellfish production, has a lot of economic merit and is expected to be important for the developing aquaculture industry in South Africa. The first fish farm in South Africa to do this is the Danger Point Abalone Farm near Gansbaai on the southern Cape coastline of South Africa, which was established in 1994 by one of South Africa's largest and oldest fishing companies, Irvin and Johnson Ltd (I&J).
