The ability of haemocytes from the eastern oyster (C. virginica) to kill non-pathogenic strains of Bacillus megaterium and Pseudomonas fluorescens in the presence or absence of an HNADPH oxidase inhibitor was investigated using luminol enhanced chemiluminescence and compared with macrophages of stripped bass (M. saxatilis), which are known to rely on reactive oxygen species (ROS) for phagocytosis, as positive controls. The results show that exposure of eastern oyster haemocytes to bacteria did notincrease ROS production. It is concluded that oyster haemocytes do not rely on ROS-dependent for bactericidal activity although this does not exclude alternative functions of phagocyte-generated ROS in eastern oyster or stripped bass immune response.
