To investigate the effects of nutrition on reactive oxygen species (ROS) during respiratory burst activity, chemiluminescence was measured in head kidney phagocytes of Atlantic salmon fed different levels of vitamin E, vitamin C, astaxanthin, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, cholesterol, triglycerides (TAG), glucose and total proteins. Respiratory burst activity was stimulated with phorbol myristate and luminol was used as substrate. Plasma vitamin C and glucose inhibited chemiluminescence response as measured by response curve area. Plasma zinc levels tended to inhibit luminescence response. Plasma Mn showed a negative correlation with chemiluminescence response at high concentrations of plasma vitamin C. Vitamin E, astaxanthin, Cu, FE, Cholesterol, TAG and totalprotein had no effect.
