Double use of coriander, black cumin and marigold

The potential for double use of coriander (Coriandrum sativum), black cumin (Nigella sativa) (both for essential and fatty oils), and marigold (Calendula officinalis, for flowers and fatty oil) was investigated in field trials during 1999-2001 in Dornburg, Thuringen, Germany. Trials with 4 coriander varieties and 3 drilling dates (autumn, early and late spring) produced significant higher yields with autumn drilling. Essential oil content was highest in the old varieties Jantar (2.3%) and Thuringer(1.4%), compared to Petro and Curry (1%). Field trials with 13 accessions of black cumin produced yields of up to 15 dt/ha, fatty contents were similar (40%), but essential oil contents varied from 0.09 to 0.5%. Field trials with 6 marigold varieties and 2 harvesting methods (with or without early flower picking) showed that harvesting flowers had no impact on yield (15-20 dt/ha) or oil contents (16-21 %) and double use was possible.
